Tips and Tricks to Maintain Your New Years Resolutions

With the beginning of a new year comes the beginning of new resolutions. However, statistically, most people give up on their resolutions by January 12th. This was discovered during a study conducted by Strava, a social network for athletes to log their activities and share with others. On top of that, it has been shown that only one in ten people achieve their New Year's Resolutions. With that being said, it is time to focus on your resolutions - or the ones that you have given up on - and give them a chance to truly change the way you approach your goals for the new year. Follow these tips and tricks to help you reach that carrot!


Making a Habit

It takes 21 days to form a habit. That is only three weeks of the new year. When you think about backing down, remind yourself that once you get through those three weeks, it will be much easier. The best way to help you form those habits is by setting small goals each day. One of the most important parts of creating a resolution or goal is writing it down. By writing it down you can truly visualize, remember, and start to hold yourself accountable for it. Place these goals somewhere you will see them everyday to remind yourself what you are working towards.

When you’re having a difficult time working towards your resolution, visualize yourself in detail achieving it. Want to lose weight? Think about how great your clothes will fit. Looking to get a Personal Best? Imagine how great you will feel after you accomplish this. Visualizing the outcome will allow you to remember why you wrote it on your list in the first place will make it easier to obtain.

Hold yourself accountable by working with others or telling others your resolutions. It is a lot harder to cancel a workout or cheat on your goal if you have someone holding you responsible. They are now counting on you and want to see you attain them too.

Getting involved is the best way to stay motivated throughout any health or fitness resolution. This brings athletes out of hibernation mode and gets them geared up for the upcoming USMS swim meets.
